A local man who was suffering with flu like symptoms has suffered multiple amputations after contracting sepsis.
When he saw his GP he immediately recognised the symptoms and sent him straight to hospital. If the infection spread an amputation would be required.
Now, his family are fundraising for prosthetic limbs to enable him to return to cycling and play football with his children.
This is a stark reminder of how serious sepsis can be and its devastating consequences. As Mr Mackey's partner says - they had not heard of the condition before his diagnosis. This is all too common a story and the reason why the UK Sepsis Trust is working with the government on a campaign to raise awareness of sepsis's signs and symptoms.
James Mackey, of Forest Park, had been ill for a couple of days in mid-October when his partner Ashley Jeans persuaded him to see his doctor.
