The year from 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2018 is AvMA’s 35th anniversary year. As a helpline adviser myself I know first hand just how vital this resource is for the public and how helpful it can be. During what can often be a very difficult time, people feel reassured being able to telephone a charity helpline and know that they can get not only accurate but impartial and free advice. They are also reassured that the solicitors on AvMA's panel are experts in what they do and will be able to adequately represent them.

Aside from the helpline, the other work that AvMA has done since being being founded in 1982 has and continues to be pivotal to patient safety. They are responsible for making clinical negligence a specialism within legal practice and more recently were significant in the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust public inquiry which helped bring about the statutory duty of candour.

I hope that AvMA continue to get the support that they need to keep both the helpline live and their campaigns a success.

There are various ways in which you can support AvMA:

  • Attendance at one of their events - I recently went to the London Curry Night and it was a great success and a very enjoyable evening!
  • Participate in an event and raise sponsorship money for AvMA.
  • A one-off or regular donation.
  • Volunteer on their helpline.
